When customers come into our dealership, a good majority of them
have used the internet to do their homework. They look into options
of a particular vehicle they are interested in, they read reviews
from Canadian Driver and JDPower and even go further and sign up
for a few of the message boards. All of this homework has totally
paid off, they know a lot more about the particular vehicle they
are interested in ... which is fantastic!
People
spend the time to shop "their" car but very few take the time to
shop their car insurance. Surprisingly enough many people pay way
too high a premuim for car insurance in Canada. Here are some tips
on keeping auto insurance rates down for your next car purchase:
1.
SHOP RATES
A
lot of people spend TOO MUCH on car insurance. There is a misconception
out there where people believe that all car insurance companies
are the same and that rates don't vary based on the same coverage
... WRONG.
A
study done in Nov 2006 determined that rates based on the same coverage
varied by over $900. I am sure that you'll agree that you could
find a million things to do with $900, right?
The internet is a huge resource, you used it to research and shop
your car, go a step further and shop your insurance rate, go and

2.
Put all cars on the same car insurance
By
doing this you receive a "Multi-vehicle discount" which can save
you 10% off both vehicles.
3.
Use one insurance for your car and home
Just
like putting all your cars on the same policy, if you combine your
home too this is also another form of discount called the "Multi-line
discount." Insurance companies offer this as a means to earn your
property business as well and it is an excellent way to get an additional
five per cent discount off your rate.
4.
Increase your deductibles
The
higher your deductible the lower your insurance rate. Insurance
is in place to cover you for damages you can't afford on your own,
but, think about it, if you are able to afford a $1000 repair job,
then raise your deducticles to that $1000 and pay less for your
insurance.
5.
Drop collision coverage if you drive an older car
Think
about this though and make sure it will pay off for you and if you
can afford to do this. But think about this, if you drive an older
car that is worth about $1000 and your deductible is $1000 then
your collision coverage doesn't amount to much does it? Again, this
one you really need to sit and think about and decide ... I am NOT
saying cut it, I am saying if it works for you and your situation
you could consider it.
6.
Buy a "low risk" car
Rates
for insurance are based on previous claims history for that vehicle.
If the car is more likely to be stolen or in an accident, then of
course you see it in paying more for car insurance. Before you buy
that new car, compare quotes to see how your possible new car rates.
You may find that you have to re-think your car purchase.
7. Don't drive to work
This
may be easier said than done, depending on where you work, but the
idea here is that the more you are on the road the higher risk of
getting into an accident. Car insurance rates are higher for people
who drive to work. If you can, take the bus or car pool, not only
are you saving on gas and parking, but you're lowering your car
insurance premium as well!
8.
Driver's training
A
majority of car insurance companies offer discounts to new drivers
who have taken a defensive driving course in the last three years.
9. Install anti-theft devices
Many
auto insurance companies realise that your car is less likely to
be stolen if you have anti-theft equipemtn installed. You can check
with your insurance company to see which devices they recognize.
Follow
these easy tips on keeping auto insurance rates down and not only
will know more about how car insurance works, you'll gave everything
you need to know capitalize on your car insurance savings!
